ABOUT

Matsuda eyewear is a brand that combines the best of traditional Japanese fashion with avant-garde design, resulting in eyewear that is playful, innovative, and irresistibly stylish. The house offers a range of sunglasses and optical frames handcrafted from only the finest materials in the world, including titanium, sterling silver, 18k solid gold and Japanese acetate. The artisans behind the Matsuda brand are true masters of their craft, with decades of experience honed by passing down knowledge and perfecting techniques from generation to generation. The result is a collection of frames that are intricately detailed, durable and strong - crafted in over 250 steps by true architects who prioritize quality over quantity.

JAPANESE CRAFTSMANSHIP

Matsuda's dedication to excellence in craftsmanship, combined with innovative design and the use of premium materials, sets the brand apart in the luxury eyewear industry. Each pair of Matsuda glasses undergoes a meticulous construction process, with meticulous attention to detail at every stage.

Matsuda uses traditional Japanese craftsmanship techniques passed down through generations to create its eyewear. These techniques include hand-carving acetate frames, intricate metalwork and hand-engraving. These artisanal methods add a level of artistry and uniqueness to each piece that makes Matsuda eyewear stand out. Their designs are often inspired by various artistic and cultural references, resulting in frames that are both sophisticated and distinctive.

In 1967, Mitsuhiro Matsuda founded his eponymous brand in Tokyo and became one of the top Japanese couturiers of his time. After releasing his first eyewear collection in 1989, Matsuda's bold and authentic designs quickly became a hit, even appearing in films such as BeetleJuice, Terminator 2 and Boomerang. Matsuda's unique pieces were inspired by art deco, industrial metalwork, and gothic cathedrals. Throughout his career, he collaborated with renowned photographers such as Nan Goldin, and the duo even won the Art Directors Club of New York Award in 1996.

By 1996, Mitsuhiro Matsuda had opened more than 500 stores worldwide. After exiting the eyewear market for a while, Matsuda was re-launched in 2012 by CEO James Kisgen, whose background includes serving as sales director at Cartier. James continued Mitsuhiro's visionary legacy, pushing the brand toward a more progressive mindset while keeping it stylish with unique designs and materials. Today, the Matsuda brand continues to be imbued with rich art and unparalleled Japanese craftsmanship, creating distinctive eyewear of unsurpassed quality. Although legendary designer Mitsuhiro Matsuda passed away in 2008, his endless passion for creating iconic eyewear lives on through his influential brand.
